Any merchant who is not able to physically swipe credit cards through a credit card processing machine thereby capturing the magnetic data can still perform credit card processing with a MOTO / Mail Order / Telephone Order merchant account. Using a MOTO merchant account, merchants will manually key into a terminal the credit card number, expiration date, CVV2 code, invoice #, billing address, billing zip, and the amount of the sale. Although all of this information does help to deter fraud, MOTO merchant account transactions are still more risky than retail swiped transactions and hence carry slightly higher discount rates and fees. Internet merchant accounts are very similar to MOTO merchant accounts in that the merchant is not able to physically swipe credit cards through a credit card processing machine thereby capturing the magnetic data. There are two ways in which Internet merchants, selling their products via a website can process credit cards. One is with a standard MOTO merchant account and a credit card machine, and the other is via an e-commerce gateway merchant account and real time credit card processing.
Using the 1st method, merchants would have the credit card, debit card, or check card information transmitted to them via e-mail through a secure form or verbally via the telephone. The merchant would then manually key the credit card number, expiration date, CVV2 code, invoice #, billing address, billing zip, and the amount of the sale into the credit card terminal for an authorization. This is the method that 1st National recommends to merchants who have new websites that are not yet generating a lot of traffic or sales. The second method for processing cards using an Internet Merchant Account is through use of an internet payment gateway. The internet gateway, also called an internet virtual terminal, links to the shopping cart of a website and automatically processes credit card, debit card, or check card information inputted by the cardholder through a secure form. Upon authorization or decline the cardholder is automatically e-mailed a copy of the transaction receipt as is the merchant. The merchant can log onto the virtual terminal anywhere in the world where they have internet access. Through the virtual terminal, the merchant can view all activity on the merchant acccount, process manual transactions for mail orders and phone orders, and customize fraud filters.
